Increased property tax exemption for seniors in Florida
Governor Crist signed a bill on April 9, 2007 that allows municipalities to increase the homestead exemption for seniors from $25,000 to $50,000. Note, however, that this gives the counties and cities the OPTION of increasing this exemption, not the obligation.
This law can be applied to the 2007 property taxes IF a city delivers a copy of their adopted ordinance to the county by June 1, 2007. Check with the Pinellas County appraiser to see specifics for 18 different municipalities. St. Petersburg, for example, has approved an additional exemption of $15,000 – which equates to about $100 in property tax reduction.
